dir. Volker Schlöndorff
Kazakhstan / Germany / France, 2007 - 105
Somewhere in the endless steppes of Central Asia lies a treasure. One man holds the key to it, a fragment of an ancient map. The young Frenchman arrives in Kazakhstan, fleeing from a family tragedy. He wants to go to the Khan Tengri Mountain, where back in the old days, shamans came to die. And this is his aim, too. But in his restless quest, he isn’t looking for fame or glory. He's looking for a way to heal his wounded soul. Ulzhan felt it the first time she laid eyes on him. A young nomad and teacher, she follows him and becomes his guardian angel...
Stunningly photographed, the film intertwines myth, magic and mystery while taking us across the rawest terrain left on Earth, and into the human soul as well.
