Back in Russia, Tania was a French teacher. For the last eight years, she and her 14-year-old son Ivan have lived as illegal immigrants in Belgium, where she makes a living as a cleaning woman. During a routine police inspection, Tania's status is discovered and she is sent to prison, while Ivan escapes.
In a so-called refugee centre, Tania refuses to give her name and burns off her fingerprints so that, having no identity, the authorities won't be able to deport her. Aside from heartrending telephone conversations, she has no way of meeting Ivan, who in the meantime finds refuge with relatives and starts to enter his teenage rebellious phase.
