Mr Kuka’s Advice
Lekcje Pana Kuki
dir. Dariusz Gajewski
Poland / Austria, 2008 - 90
Waldemar, a Polish youngster, makes his way to Vienna, the Austrian capital, on a cheap Polish coach trip. To prepare for his encounter with "The Golden West", he has soaked up endless wisdom from his somewhat strange neighbour, Mr. Kuka, a self-proclaimed expert. On the bus to Vienna, Waldemar already starts to doubt if Mr. Kuka’s advice corresponds to reality. The shabby bus resembles a tipped-over refrigerator, and the passengers are hardly tourists, seeming rather to be intent on smuggling a whole town’s supply of vodka and cigarettes across the border. In Vienna, Waldemar realizes he has been set up.
Based on the best-selling novel by Radek Knapp, the film unmasks the myth of the Western "El Dorado" held by the average Eastern European.
