What The Sun Has Seen
Co słonko widziało
dir. Michał Rosa
Poland, 2006 - 107
The hot July of 2005. A large city in Silesia, and three people who hardly know one another: little Sebastian, teenage Marta, and 50-year-old Józef. Fate forces them to quickly raise a sum of money that may be small, but is still beyond their reach. The fourth and equally important hero of this story is the city. Chaotic, marked by war and changing borders, dirty and beautiful, poor and full of nouveau riche enclaves, cruel, but also providing shelter to the needy.
“I make films about people we usually pass without admiration, interest, or even with slight fear. This kind of film is not introduced into society, it doesn’t attend banquets, but, from the perspective of a clerk, a worker, a housewife, it follows people’s struggles with life. As Professor Elzenberg wrote, life is constant oppression, and those who help others go through it with dignity are mentors. “What the Sun Saw” is a parable about people who did not have the good fortune to meet a mentor in their lives, though they tried.”
