Maria Coughlin, a precocious, gum-chewing high-school dropout of 17, is expecting a local football star's baby. He leaves her in the lurch when he hears she is pregnant. When her father finds out, he has a heart attack and dies. Her long-suffering mother now decides to make her daughter's life hell. But Maria leaves home and, after extensive wandering, bumps into Matthew, a pleasant but crazy computer engineer who causes chaos at work and in the bar. He also carries a hand grenade around in his pocket so that he always has the permanent solution at hand. At home he is under the thumb of a tyrranical father. The two young people discover that they can help each other. Against the resistance of their parents and an unsympathetic environment, they try to find common ground and thus give meaning to their lives.
