Belgium / Indonesia, 2019 - 65
A portrait of the largest Muslim punk community in the world. Eka is a young punk living with his friends in the streets of the Indonesian capital – Jakarta. After the General Suharto era, the city is struggling with poverty, corruption and environmental pollution. The boys have facial tattoos, which is a stigmatizing factor in Indonesian society. To the punks themselves, tattoos are a symbol of spiritual connection with the Dayaks – a people living in settlements isolated from civilization. Living according to their centuries-old tradition, completely in tune with nature, the Dayaks struggle to maintain their identity which is threatened by the disappearance of forests. Both these marginalized Indonesian communities live on the fringes of society and wonder about their future. We embark on a journey with them to discover what it means to have a place called home, and to belong somewhere. A hybrid story intertwining documentary, video art and photography with fairy-tale traditions and contemporary reality. A film with an incredibly rich soundtrack, from punk music to traditional Indonesian gamelan music.
