Women Do Cry
dir. Vesela Kazakova, Mina Mileva
Bulgaria / France, 2021 - 107
A mother stork is shot down from a chimney. A woman suffering from postnatal depression nearly jumps off a balcony. A girl has to deal with the stigma of HIV. A woman applies make-up to two kittens. A mother looks for magic in the lunar calendar. All these events are commonplace for this seemingly normal Bulgarian family, revealing the fine line they live between fragility and absurdity. These women are united by a shared trauma, but now they are ready to confront their father’s troubling past. In the meantime, their country is shaken up by violent anti-equality protests. A story based on real events, showing how a family mainly composed of women handles sexism and conservative values in their country. A celebration of female solidarity and self-expression. The film premiered at the Cannes festival.
